What Does It Mean to Be Sent by Jesus?
When we think about mission, we may picture missionaries traveling to another country, pastors preaching, or people standing in front of a crowd talking about Jesus.
But Jesus' call to mission is much closer to home. After His resurrection, Jesus said to His disciples:
“As the Father has sent me, I also send you.”John 20:21
To follow Jesus is to be sent by Jesus.
Jesus Is the One Who Sends Us
Mission begins with Jesus.
In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus tells His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. He sends them with His authority and gives them a clear purpose: help people know Him, follow Him, and become His disciples.
We are joining the mission Jesus has already given His Church.
Every Disciple Has a Part
You do not have to be a pastor or missionary to be sent by Jesus.
Every follower of Christ has a part to play.
Jesus may send you to your family, your workplace, your neighborhood, your church, your school, or a friend who needs to hear about Him.
Sometimes being sent means sharing the gospel. Sometimes it means serving someone, encouraging a person who is struggling, praying with someone, or helping another believer take a step toward Jesus.
Jesus Goes With Us
Jesus ended the Great Commission with a promise:
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”Matthew 28:20
We may feel nervous or inadequate. We may not know exactly what to say or what will happen.
Our responsibility is to be faithful.
We pray. We go. We serve. We speak about Jesus. And we trust Him with the results.
Jesus sends us, and Jesus goes with us.
