What is Repentance?

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. It’s more than just saying “sorry,” it’s a deep heart change that leads to a new direction in life. It’s turning away from sin, confessing to God, and walking toward Him with a new purpose. And when you repent, God meets you with mercy and grace.

Here’s what repentance involves:

Recognizing Sin
You become aware that you've done something wrong or that your life isn't aligned with God’s will. This realization comes through God’s kindness and the work of the Holy Spirit.
“...not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” Romans 2:4 (NIV)

Feeling Genuine Sorrow
It’s not just about guilt, it’s feeling true regret for how your sin has affected your relationship with God and others. This sorrow leads to a desire for change.

Confessing to God
You honestly admit your sin to God, trusting in His mercy and grace.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NIV)

Turning Away from Sin
Repentance includes a decision to leave sin behind and walk in a new direction.
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” Acts 3:19 (NIV)

Walking in a New Way of Life
Repentance results in visible change, a life that seeks to follow Jesus daily.

God’s Response to Repentance
God doesn’t just forgive, heaven rejoices when even one person turns back to Him.
“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:7 (NIV)

Healing and Restoration
Repentance brings renewal, not just for individuals, but for communities.
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
