What Is the Gospel, and Why Do We Need It?

The word gospel means good news. But what makes the gospel such good news?

The gospel is the good news of what God has done through Jesus Christ to save us from sin and bring us back into a relationship with Him. It is at the heart of the Christian faith and the foundation of following Jesus.

We Were Created for God

The gospel begins with God.

When God created the world, everything He made was good. Human beings were created in His image and made to know Him, walk with Him, and enjoy His presence (Genesis 1:26–31).

We were created for God, but something went wrong.

Sin Separated Us From God

In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Sin entered the world, and the relationship between God and humanity was broken.

Sin is more than simply making mistakes or failing to be a good person. Sin is rebellion against God. It affects our thoughts, desires, words, and actions, and it separates us from the God who created us.

Paul describes our condition clearly in Ephesians 2:1:

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.”

We cannot fix our separation from God by simply trying harder or becoming a better person. Good works cannot erase our sin or earn God's acceptance.

And this is where the gospel becomes good news.

God Made a Way Through Jesus

Ephesians 2 does not stop with our sin. It turns our attention to God's mercy:

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.” Ephesians 2:4–5

God did not leave us separated from Him.

Jesus Christ came into the world, lived the perfect life we could not live, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again from the dead. Through Jesus, God made a way for sinners to be forgiven and brought back to Him.

The gospel is about what God has already done for us through Jesus.

Salvation Is a Gift

One of the most important truths of the gospel is that we cannot earn salvation.

Ephesians 2:8–9 says:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

We are saved by grace through faith.

Grace means that God gives us what we do not deserve. We do not earn His forgiveness by our good works, religious activities, or trying to become good enough. Salvation is God's gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ.

Our good works matter, but they come after salvation, not as a way of earning it. Ephesians 2:10 says that we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works. We follow Jesus because He has saved us, not in order to make Him save us.

Why Do We Need the Gospel?

We need the gospel because we need Jesus.

Every person has sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). We cannot save ourselves. We need forgiveness. We need to be reconciled to God. We need new life.

And that is exactly what Jesus offers.

The gospel tells us that our sin is real, but God's grace is greater. Our separation from God is real, but Jesus has made a way back. We cannot save ourselves, but Jesus can save us.

We continue to depend on God's grace, trust in Jesus, and remember that our hope is found in Him.

The Good News

The gospel can be summed up simply:

  • God created us for Himself.

  • Sin separated us from Him.

  • Jesus came to save us.

  • Salvation is God's gift, received through faith.

If you have never placed your faith in Jesus, the invitation of the gospel is for you. And if you already follow Jesus, the gospel is still the foundation of your life.

We never outgrow our need for Jesus.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

The cross is at the center of Christianity. But why did Jesus have to die? If God loves us, couldn't He simply forgive us? To understand the cross, we first need to understand the seriousness of sin.
