What Does John 15 Teach Us About the Christian Life?
John 15 gives us one of Jesus' clearest pictures of what it means to follow Him.
Jesus describes Himself as the vine and His followers as the branches.
From this picture, we can learn several important truths about the Christian life.
Jesus Is Our Source of Life
A branch depends on the vine.
In the same way, our spiritual life comes from Christ. We cannot live faithfully apart from Him.
Jesus says:
“Apart from me you can do nothing.”John 15:5
Everything begins with our connection to Him.
We Are Called to Remain
Jesus repeatedly tells His disciples to remain in Him.
We remain through prayer, Scripture, obedience, worship, fellowship, and dependence on His grace. But these practices are not the source of our life. Jesus is.
God Wants Us to Bear Fruit
Jesus says:
“If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”John 15:5
A branch connected to the vine produces fruit.
As we remain in Christ, His character begins to be seen in our lives. We learn to love, forgive, serve, obey, and live in ways that reflect Him.
Fruit is evidence of a life connected to Christ.
God Prunes Us
Jesus also says that the Father prunes branches so that they will become more fruitful.
Sometimes God uses correction, conviction, difficulty, or circumstances to expose things in our lives that need to change.
Pruning can be uncomfortable. But God is not finished with us. He is working in us so that our lives will increasingly reflect Christ.
Abiding Leads to Love and Obedience
Jesus connects abiding with obedience and love.
“This is my command: Love each other.”John 15:17
To abide in Christ is to remain close to Him, listen to His Word, obey His commands, and allow His love to shape the way we treat others.
The Christian Life Is Life With Jesus
John 15 brings us back to a simple truth: Jesus is the vine. We are the branches.
We need Him and cannot produce lasting spiritual fruit by ourselves. We need to remain in Him, receive from Him, and depend on Him.
Learn to live with Jesus, every day.
