Can We Earn God's Forgiveness?

2 min read

Many people believe that if they do enough good things, become a better person, or try hard enough, God will forgive them.

But is that what the Bible teaches?

We Cannot Earn Forgiveness

The Bible tells us that every person has sinned.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”Romans 3:23

Sin separates us from God. We cannot simply balance our wrong actions with enough good ones. Going to church, helping people, giving money, or trying to live a good life cannot remove our sin.

This is why we need the gospel.

God Offers What We Cannot Earn

Ephesians 2:8–9 says:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works.”

Salvation is a gift from God.

Grace means that God gives us what we could never earn for ourselves. We do not come to God saying, “Look at everything I have done. I deserve to be forgiven.”

We come because of what Jesus has done.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live. He died on the cross for our sins and rose again. Through Him, we can receive forgiveness and be reconciled to God.

What About Good Works?

Good works are important. As Christians, we are called to love God, obey Him, serve others, and live differently.

But our good works are a response to God's grace. They are not the price of our salvation.

Ephesians 2:10 says that we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works.

First comes God's grace.

Then comes a life that responds to that grace.

We obey because we have received His love.

Forgiveness Is a Gift

You cannot earn God's forgiveness.

And that is actually good news.

If forgiveness depended on how good we could become, none of us could have peace. But our hope rests in Jesus, not in our performance.

Forgiveness is God's gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

The cross is at the center of Christianity. But why did Jesus have to die? If God loves us, couldn't He simply forgive us? To understand the cross, we first need to understand the seriousness of sin.
