How to Become a Christian?
Becoming a Christian is about starting a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The following is a step-by-step guide.
Understand the Gospel
The word "gospel" means "good news."
The central message of Christianity is that God loves you and created you for a relationship with Him, but sin separates us from God. Jesus Christ, God's Son, came to earth, lived a sinless life, died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rose again to restore our relationship with God.
Key Verses:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
Acknowledge Your Need for God
Recognize that you have sinned and need forgiveness.
Sin is anything that separates us from God, including wrong actions, thoughts, or attitudes.
Key Verse:
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
Repent and Turn to God
Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.
This is a heartfelt decision to let go of your old way of living and allow God to lead your life.
Key Verse:
"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." (Acts 3:19)
Believe in Jesus Christ
Trust that Jesus is who He says He is: the Son of God and Savior of the world.
Believe that His death and resurrection make it possible for you to have a personal relationship with God.
Key Verses:
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Invite Jesus Into Your Life
Pray to God, asking Him to forgive your sins and inviting Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of your life.
This is often called the "prayer of salvation," but the exact words are not as important as the sincerity of your heart.
Say This Prayer:
"Dear God, I know I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. Amen."
Commit to Following Jesus
Becoming a Christian is the beginning of a lifelong journey of growing in faith and living for Christ.
Spend time in prayer, reading the Bible, and seeking to align your life with God’s will.
Key Verse:
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23)
