What is Baptism?
Baptism is an important step in the Christian faith. It is a public declaration of our decision to follow Jesus. Baptism does not save us, but it is a symbol of what Jesus has done in our lives.
Baptism Represents
New Life in Christ
Just as Jesus died, was buried, and rose again, baptism symbolizes dying to our old sinful life and being raised to a new life in Him.
Romans 6:4 – "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
Washing Away of Sins
Water baptism symbolizes that Jesus has cleansed us from our sins.
Acts 22:16 – "And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name."
A Public Declaration of Faith
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward change. It is a way to show the world that we belong to Jesus.
Matthew 28:19 – "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
We Must Come to Christ by Our Own Choice
Baptism should never be forced. Every person must decide for themselves to follow Jesus. No one else can make this decision for us.
Romans 10:9 – "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
John 1:12 – "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."
This means that baptism is for believers—those who have made a personal decision to follow Jesus. We are not baptized to become Christians; we are baptized because we are Christians.
How to Be Baptized
Step 1: Believe in Jesus
Before baptism, a person must repent (turn away from sin) and believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
Acts 2:38 – "Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’"
Step 2: Be Baptized by Water
Baptism in the Bible was done by immersion in water (going fully under). This represents being buried with Christ and rising again.
Matthew 3:16 – "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water."
Step 3: Live for Jesus
Baptism is not the end—it’s the beginning of a new life with Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
Baptism is a Public Declaration
Baptism is a way to show others that we belong to Jesus. It is a celebration of our new life in Christ!
Galatians 3:27 – "For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ."
By being baptized, we are saying:
I belong to Jesus
I am leaving my old life behind
I will follow Him forever
